Rough Outs
A basswood rough out is a piece of basswood that has been pre-cut into the basic three-dimensional shape of a carving, with much of the waste wood already removed. Rough out base is 2x2. Unlike a flat pattern or bandsawn blank, a roughout usually has the major forms already established—such as the head, body, arms, legs, hat, or other large masses—but little or none of the final detail.
The carver then uses knives and/or gouges to refine the shapes, add facial features, clothing, texture, and details, and ultimately finish the carving.
In simple terms: A rough out gives you the basic shape. You do the actual carving. TO BE CLEAR: THESE ARE UNFINISHED WORKS.
