Advice for new carvers! 1.) Learn to keep your knife sharp sooner rather than later. 2.) Carve often, every day if you can. 3.) Push yourself each carving, dont let yourself stagnate on the same things, throw something into the mix that intimidates you! 4.) Be choosy on who's advice you take. Look at their wok, how they've progressed and determine if they have advice you want to take. 5.) Dont give up when you make a mistake or a terrible carving. I still make terrible stuff often, but its all a part of growing! #woodcarving #woodcarver #whittling #woodart #fantasyartist

Carving dwarves is my happy place. Feels like i'm freeing them from a Basswood prison one step at a time, breathing life into them. yes its silly, I know. I dont care, its fun! Want to get into Woodcarving? You need several things, a sharp knife, a leather strop with compound for honing your blade, safety gloves (A5 or better) and basswood (to carve like i do at least.) Why Basswood? Its softer than other hardwoods and holds detail well. Learning to carve with basswood is akin to learning to drive on an automatic. It simplifies and streamlines learning. Woods like Walnut and oak can be carved, but learning to carve with them as the starting point is like learning to drive on an 18 wheeler Semi Truck with manual transmission.
