There is no question when beginners ask if they should wear a carving glove. Unequivocally, the answer is yes. It's not just best practice. I wear one in my videos because I want to send a message to everyone interested in this hobby. Safety matters. Now, let's be clear about something. A glove doesn't make you invincible. It doesn't replace good knife control, proper technique, or a sharp tool. What it does do is give you a margin for error when something goes wrong. And something will go wrong on a long enough time span. Every woodcarver slips eventually. Every woodcarver makes a bad cut eventually. Every woodcarver gets distracted, tired, rushed, or overconfident eventually. The question isn't whether you'll make a mistake. The question is what happens when you do. A carving glove turns the vast, vast majority of those mistakes into close calls (where you continue to carve) instead of emergency room visits. I've heard every argument against them.

Woodcarving Study Sticks on Eyes and Mouths from Paula Devereaux in 1993. they're really well done and in fantastic shape for being over 30 years old. They are resin casting of the original basseood carving. The goal here is that students can use them to study techniques at eliciting the same things when carving in wood by seeing the steps / process the instructor went through to obtain the form.
