An outside the box idea if you're looking for ways to get your hands on examples of caricature carving to hold in your hand for study purposes this is a relatively inexpensive idea you can try. Spit & Whittle was a late-20th-century American woodcarving company best known for its hand-carved caricature head bottle toppers that showed up in gift shops and galleries through the 1980s and 1990s. The designs are from Chris Hammack, a member of the Caricature Carvers of America, which explains the strong feature exaggeration, confident knife cuts, and solid head structure packed into such a small format. Though originally sold as functional barware, they’ve become affordable little master studies in caricature design that still hold up decades later. Another Vintage woodcarving study stick, this one isnt a resin copy, its original basswood. I had never heard of Lee or Lillian Perkins before Michael Denton reached out to me and expressed an interest in sharing this one with me (a gift that i'm extremely grateful for.) I thoroughly enjoy not just woodcarving but the history we have behind it, and the teachers who have cared to work to keep the craft alive and going. Having the opportunity just to learn about them is fun for me. Lee & Lillian Perkins (LLP) were a husband-and-wife woodcarving team from Knoxville, Tennessee. Their interlocking “LLP” mark represents their partnership—Lee carved, and Lillian painted. Lee was a retired Boy Scout Executive and a dedicated follower of Ron Ransome and the “old world Santa” tradition. He studied under Ron Ransome, refining advanced carving techniques and smoothing the classic Santa style into his own interpretations. Lillian, a stay-at-home mom and watercolorist, brought the carvings to life with her painting and finishing skills. Together, they taught and sold Santas throughout North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Lee passed away at a relatively young age and little information remains online, the Perkins’ legacy lives on through their carvings and the students they influenced. #WoodCarving #woodart #CaricatureCarving #art #folkart
